At University Pediatric Dentistry, we understand that dental treatment for children is definitely not one size fits all. That’s why we like to offer multiple options for treatment. For children, getting dental work can be overwhelming and challenging. Dr. Urvi Jadav works with your child, assesses his or her needs and formulates a treatment plan that can help treat them in a way that makes your child comfortable and confident.

Who would be a candidate for oral sedation?

With very young children or children with dental anxiety, oral sedation is often a way to help them relax and have their dental work completed.  This treatment modality can be very effective for children who have the ability to cooperate but have some anxiety or more dental needs.

What does an oral sedation appointment look like?

This appointment is completed at our office - University Pediatric Dentistry. First, Dr. Urvi Jadav will determine if your child is a candidate for oral sedation. This is dependent on numerous factors some of which include medical history, amount of dental treatment needed, and behavior at their examination visit.  Your child will not be asleep. They will be in a more relaxed state. Instructions will be reviewed in detail as to when your child can last eat or drink, when to call to reschedule, etc. On the day of the treatment, a physical examination has to be completed by Dr. Urvi Jadav. If the child is a candidate, he or she will be given an oral medication to drink. The medication and its dosage will be chosen based on certain criteria. It will help relax the patient. After about 45 to 60 minutes of wait time, we will start the procedure. We will welcome the child to pick a movie to watch while we work. Our University Pediatric Dentistry assistant will do show and tell with your child so that they will be more comfortable for the procedure.  We will have constant communication with your child and you are welcome to watch as we complete the procedure. Safety is always our number one priority.

Are parents welcome back to observe?

Yes. Parents are welcome to either come in to the treatment room or wait in the lobby. It is up to you. If Dr. Urvi Jadav has any reason to believe that your child may do better for the procedure without you in the room, she will discuss this with you.
